DIR EN GREY Singer Hospitalized; Japanese Dates Cancelled
July 24, 2006DIR EN GREY singer Kyo is reportedly in the hospital because of problems with his throat. The band has cancelled two of its remaining shows in Japan and is preparing for its participation in the "Family Values Tour" with KORN and DEFTONES. According to a representative for the group's American label, Warcon Enterprises, LLC, "as of right now, the band is not canceling any U.S dates."
DIR EN GREY made their stateside debut with a showcase at the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference in Austin, Texas in March before following it up by stops at the 800-capacity Avalon in New York and the 2,000-capacity Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles (both of which sold out within hours of being announced online).
The Japanese-speaking band gained its audience without singing in English, according to Billboard.com. The quintet has been building in popularity in its home country for about 10 years, releasing four full-length albums through either Firewall Div or Free-Will Japan and a variety of singles and video collections.
